St Katharine Docks flats and refits of 1970s to 1990s homes
The Tower conservation area, designated in March 1977, runs from the Tower of London east to St Katharine Docks. The docks closed at the end of the 1960s and have been rebuilt bit by bit from the 1970s on; the council's appraisal describes the homes there as mostly five to eight storeys, with flats along Sun Walk and Cartwright Street and the older five-storey Matilda House set back among trees. In the Council Tax stock round EC3N 4DJ, 54.5% of the homes with a recorded build date went up between 1973 and 1999, and just 10 of the 3,480 in 2015 or later.
So a typical job here is the refit of a flat built 25 to 50 years ago. Out go the old kitchen and bathroom. The dust from cutting into old plaster gets behind radiators, into vents and onto the tops of fitted wardrobes. The crew dusts from the ceiling line down, cleans the new cupboards inside and out once they are empty and vacuums and mops the floors last, then dusts again once the first pass has settled.
Warehouse homes and listed buildings near the Tower
In St Katharine's and Wapping ward, 11.7% of households live in flats in converted buildings other than houses, the Census group that takes in warehouse conversions, and only 0.9% in flats carved out of houses. Ivory House is the only original warehouse left at St Katharine Docks, and within 800 m of EC3N 4DJ there are 264 listed buildings, 32 of them at Grade I. Exposed brick, iron columns and old timber hold builders' dust in every joint; the crew vacuums them first and wipes with a product that suits the surface. Walls are not washed.
Offices, shops and restaurants round the Tower and Minories get cleaning a fit-out before opening at £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32, from £212 for 2 cleaners for 3 hours. On new glazing the crew lifts labels and paint flecks, and outside window cleaning is added only where the glass can be reached safely from inside or the ground.
The City of London side of EC3N
The EC3N postcode district is split between Tower Hamlets and the City of London, and the City's rules are tighter. It allows no skips or building materials anywhere on its streets; whatever has to sit on the highway must stay inside a licensed hoarding. Where residents could be disturbed, noisy work and deliveries are limited to 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 2pm on Saturday. The whole City is one controlled parking zone, controlled 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 7am to 11am on Saturday, and its pay bays have a four-hour maximum.
The City has no reuse and recycling centre of its own. Its residents may use the Tower Hamlets one with photo ID, and its own guide says building waste should be dealt with by the company doing the work. Either way the builder takes it before our crew starts.
The crews also work in Whitechapel, over Tower Bridge in Southwark (SE1) and across Tower Hamlets, and the full price list has every size of home.

Is Tower Hill in the City of London or in Tower Hamlets?
Both. EC3N addresses fall either side of the boundary, so check which council sends your council tax bill: skip, noise and parking rules differ between the two.
How much is a builders clean for a 1-bed flat at St Katharine Docks?
Usually £212 all in for 2 cleaners for 3 hours after a refurbishment, or £272 when plaster dust has gone through every room. The £32 kit charge and travel are included.
Can the crew clean exposed brick and beams in a warehouse flat?
Yes, by vacuuming and dusting them before the surfaces below. Brick that has been sealed can be wiped; washing down walls is not part of a builders clean.
How much notice do you need for a Tower Hill clean?
About a week is usually enough, though Fridays and weekends go first. Send photos by email and the office confirms crew, hours and arrival time.
