The 1920s estates: Ellingham, Wedlock and New Ideal Homesteads
The railway reached Barnehurst in 1895, but the house builders only came after the Bexleyheath line was electrified in 1926. That year J W Ellingham started the Barnehurst Estate of 578 semi-detached houses along Barnehurst Road, then called Hills and Holes Road, selling them at £600 each, and W H Wedlock began the Mayplace Farm estate on Oakwood Drive. In 1929 Wedlock laid out Lyndhurst, Brantwood and Risedale Roads, named after places in the Lake District, and New Ideal Homesteads followed with the Barnehurst Park Estate east of Barnehurst Avenue.
