Newton-le-Willows in numbers

Vulcan Village and the older terraces

Vulcan Village was built between about 1833 and 1841 for workers at the Vulcan Foundry. The council's appraisal counts 114 two-storey brick homes in six terraced rows and calls it one of the earliest planned settlements for artisan workers in the country. It has an Article 4 direction, as does the High Street conservation area, which brings uPVC windows and doors, front garden walls and hard-standings under control; the Earlestown conservation area falls within 800 m of the middle of the ward too. About one in five homes with a recorded build date in the area (20.5%) predates 1900.

In a worker's cottage nearly two centuries old, a refurbishment often means old plaster hacked off and new plaster on, and that dust is gritty. It collects in the window reveals, on the stair treads and in the gaps between boards. The crew vacuums before it wipes, so the grit comes up before a cloth touches it, uses very little water on old timber, and takes paint flecks off old glass only where they lift cleanly. Getting plaster dust out of a home has the order of work.

New houses since 2015 and the handover clean

About 570 homes in the area round the middle of the ward date from 2015 or later, with another 11.5% of homes with a recorded build date from 2000 to 2014 (Council Tax records, 2025). The town also secured £20 million in spring 2024 from the government's Plans for Neighbourhoods programme, and its investment plan for April 2026 to March 2030 puts regeneration, high streets and heritage first.

A newly built house comes with protective film on the glass, stickers on the sanitaryware, dust in every kitchen drawer and plaster spots on the floor. The crew peels the film and labels off, cleans the units inside and out, wipes sealant smears where they will come off and vacuums and mops every floor. A new 3-bed takes 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272 all in, and a new 4-bed £302. If the developer's snagging team is due back, book the clean after its last visit. Labels on the glazing are covered in window cleaning after the builders.

Semis, shared houses and the Junction Lane tip

In Newton-le-Willows West ward 45.7% of households live in semis and 26.8% in terraces (Census 2021). A 3-bed semi after a new kitchen or an extension usually takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332 all in. If every wall has been replastered, allow 3 cleaners for 5 hours, £482.

The council names the ward as one of four with the most HMOs, and under its January 2026 planning document one more HMO is normally refused once they would make up over a tenth of the homes within 50 metres. A landlord re-letting an existing shared house of five or more sharers still needs the mandatory licence, £248 a year. A 5-bed shared house after a refurbishment is 3 cleaners for 5 hours, £482 all in.

The Junction Lane recycling centre is in the town and takes rubble, plasterboard and soil from residents; paint has to go to Ravenhead. What the builder strips out leaves with the builder or a licensed carrier, because the crew takes no waste and needs clear rooms to work in. Skip, scaffold and dispensation fees are on after builders cleaning in St Helens.

Parking for the crew and the towns next door

If the house has a drive, leave it free on the day. For a terrace with a yellow line outside, the council's dispensation to park, meant for people working at a property with no other parking, keeps the van legal; the admin fee is lower with more than two working days' notice, so ask early. Tell the office what you arrange, and paid parking is passed on at cost.

Haydock, to the west, shares the St Helens rules. Over the borough line Golborne (WA3) is in Wigan and Warrington has its own council, so skips and parking change there; the totals on our prices are the same everywhere.

Newton-le-Willows builders clean questions

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.

Can you clean a Vulcan Village cottage after a full renovation?

Yes. The crew brings ladders up to about 2 m, works top to bottom and keeps water off the old boards. Send photos first so the office can set the hours.

We have bought a new house in WA12. Does it need a builders clean?

Usually a light one: film off the windows, dust out of the units and wardrobes, floors vacuumed and mopped. A new 3-bed is £272 all in.

Can the crew do the patio as well?

Not as part of the builders clean, which covers the inside and a sweep of any balcony. Jet washing a patio or path is an add-on at £4 a m².

How far ahead should we book?

About a week's notice is usually enough, and Fridays and weekends book up first. Pick a day after the last painting is done and the trades have cleared out.
