New flats over old shops: what Soho's homes need
Of the homes with a recorded build date in the local Census area, 45.3% were built before 1900 and 18.7% from 2015 onwards, about 1,260 of its 6,840 properties. A new flat on the upper floors of a rebuilt corner needs mostly snagging detail: protective film off the window frames, labels off the glass, grout haze off bathroom wall tiles and a wipe inside every kitchen unit. A new 1-bed flat like that is often a light clean, 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in.
An old house over a shop is often refurbished floor by floor. There is no lift, the stair is steep and narrow, and plaster dust from the works has settled on every tread, banister and door top. The crew carries everything up, starts at the top and comes down. Expect 2 cleaners for 4 hours for a 2-bed flat of that kind, £272 all in.
Narrow streets, street markets and the bags-off rule
Soho kept its late seventeenth century street plan: long streets north to south, shorter ones east to west and many narrow courts and alleys between them. The conservation area, first designated in 1969 and extended five times since, runs from Oxford Street to Charing Cross Road and the backs of the buildings on Kingly Street. Berwick Street and Rupert Street both have licensed street markets, so on market days a van cannot simply pull up outside.
Soho's shopping streets are bags-off-streets areas: rubbish may go out no more than 30 minutes before the scheduled collection. Builders' sacks and offcuts have to go straight into a skip or the builder's own van, and the crew needs them gone before it starts, because it does not remove builders' waste.
Parking is zone G, shared with the West End and Covent Garden. Paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, resident bays in sub-zone G1 around the clock, and a daily trade permit costs £68.30, the highest in Westminster alongside zone F. Agree where the crew's car goes before the day: in Soho the stop to unload is short and the carry to the door is long.
Restaurants, bars and studios before opening night
Soho has a lot of commercial fit-outs. A new restaurant or bar usually means stainless steel to wipe down, quarry or porcelain tiles with grout haze, dust on every light fitting and extract grille, and paint flecks on the shopfront glass. Haze across a whole tiled floor is the hard floor deep clean, £6 a m² extra. The crew cleans the kitchen surfaces and the outside of appliances; inside an oven or appliance is extra. Commercial premises are £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents, and a dusty fit-out of a small bar is often 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272 all in. Read more on commercial after builders cleaning and on kitchen and bathroom cleaning.
Covent Garden's fit-outs, east across Charing Cross Road, are on builders cleans in Covent Garden; the streets north of Oxford Street are on Fitzrovia, and west of Regent Street is Mayfair. Council fees for skips and bay suspensions are on the Westminster page.

How much is a builders clean for a 1-bed flat in Soho?
Usually £212 all in for 2 cleaners for 3 hours, and from £212 all in for the smallest jobs. A flat with a second shower room takes a little longer. See the full price list.
Can you clean our flat while the restaurant downstairs is still being fitted?
Yes, as long as the works in the flat itself are finished and nobody needs to pass through it. If the fitters share the stair, expect some dust to come back up.
Where does the crew park in Soho?
A space you provide, a paid bay or a zone G trade permit. If the job is on Berwick Street or Rupert Street, tell the office the market days when it rings.
