The Old Oak and Wormholt cottage estates
The London County Council bought the land for the Old Oak Estate in 1905 and built it in two goes: west of the railway in 1912 and 1913, the eastern half from 1920 to 1923. Finished, it had 1,056 homes, most of them small cottages of three or four rooms. Next door, Hammersmith's own Wormholt Estate was planned from 1919, and by 1926 some 600 houses stood on the 50 acres between Old Oak Common Lane, Steventon Road and Bloemfontein Road. Both sit inside the Old Oak and Wormholt conservation area, designated in 1980.
Three in four homes here with a recorded build date, 75.9% in the council tax records, date from 1919 to 1939. For a builders clean that means compact rooms, steep narrow stairs and small windows, most of them replacements. The rooms are quick. The stairs are slow, because dust from a loft or a rewire collects on every tread, spindle and the underside of the handrail, and the crew wipes each one by hand.
Loft conversions and extensions under Article 4
Two Article 4 directions, from 1984 and 1993, cover many houses in the conservation area. On the addresses they list, changes to the front roof slope, gables and dormers, rendering or cladding the walls, and painting brickwork all need planning permission. If your house is on the list, a dormer at the front needs consent, so check with the council before the builder orders the frames.
A loft job drops dust through the hatch onto the landing and down the stairs to the hall, even with sheets taped up. An extension leaves plaster dust through the ground floor and grit in the tracks of the new doors to the garden. The crew starts in the loft room, works down the house and finishes on the floors, then vacuums the stairs a second time because fine dust from the rooms above settles on them again. A dust clean after sanding and plastering shows the full order.
New blocks along Wood Lane
The blocks along Wood Lane are tall and new. The London Plan gives the White City opportunity area room for 7,000 homes and 2,000 jobs, and the council's brownfield register lists more sites for new homes along Wood Lane.
Handover cleans in these blocks are mostly light work: dust from the final fix, film on the glazing and sealant smears in the bathrooms. A 2-bed with nothing heavier usually takes 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in. Book the goods lift through the concierge and tell us where the van can stop.

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.
Can you clean a Wormholt cottage after a loft conversion?
Yes, once the loft is finished and the builders have taken their tools and waste away. The crew cleans the new room, the landing, the stairs and the rooms below, where most of the dust lands.
Is a small 1930s house cheaper to clean than a Victorian terrace?
It is priced the same way, by the number of bedrooms and how heavy the work was. Small rooms are often quicker, so the office may suggest fewer hours when it sees your photos.
Do you do handover cleans for new flats on Wood Lane?
Yes, for buyers, landlords and developers, once the snagging trades have finished. Send the flat numbers and the block's rules for the lift and loading bay.
