The 1910 garden suburb and its competition houses
The Victoria County History tells the story. In 1910 Herbert Raphael and two other Liberal MPs formed Gidea Park Ltd to build a garden suburb on the Gidea Hall estate, and arranged with the Great Eastern Railway for a station at Squirrels Heath, now Gidea Park. About 100 architects entered the competition for the first houses, and 140 had been built by 1911, nearly all of them detached and many in Tudor styles, roughcast, colour-washed or half-timbered. Eastern Avenue cut across the north side in the 1920s, and a second competition in 1934 added more.
The Gidea Park conservation area covers the heart of the suburb, and the Royal Liberty School nearby is listed Grade II*. Houses like these keep their original joinery, doors and glass through a new kitchen or a loft, and the builders' dust gets into every moulding. The crew goes over panelled doors, deep skirtings and window boards by hand, and tries paint flecks on old glass only where the glass will take it.
Interwar semis and post-war flats round Squirrels Heath
Most of the housing round the station came after the first suburb. In the Council Tax records for the area, 48.1% of homes with a recorded build date were built between 1919 and 1939, 26.4% between 1945 and 1972 and 11.8% between 2000 and 2014. In Squirrels Heath ward 36.4% of households live in semis, 14.9% in detached houses and 29.3% in flats, and 73.4% own their home. Elvet Avenue, once Factory Road, began in the 1840s as about 50 houses for workers at the railway company's tarpaulin factory and was rebuilt in 1964 as council tower flats.
On an interwar semi the usual work is a loft with a shower room, a knocked-through kitchen and diner, or a side extension, and the dust goes everywhere the air does. The crew starts at the top of the house and dusts every ledge, frame, radiator and switch twice, because the finest plaster dust settles again. A 3-bed after a refurbishment usually takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours, £332 all in. A dust clean after sanding and plastering explains the second pass.
Getting a Squirrels Heath flat ready to let
18.5% of households in the ward rent privately, and from 18 March 2026 Squirrels Heath is one of the seven Havering wards under selective licensing, which runs to 17 March 2031. A landlord refitting a flat before a new let needs it clean for the inventory and the photos, and the clean has to wait until the decorator has gone and the rubbish is out.
A 1-bed after a refurbishment usually takes 2 cleaners for 3 hours: £212 all in. The crew does the kitchen units inside and out once empty, the bathroom tiles and grout, the inside of the windows and every floor, and the landlord walks round with the crew before it leaves. Anything pointed out is put right there and then.
The council's brownfield register also lists sites for new homes nearby, such as HCL House on Eastern Road in Romford.
Parking near Gidea Park station
Gidea Park station is on the Elizabeth line in fare zone 6. Havering's permits are virtual and sold through MiPermit, and the council would rather residents did not spend visitor permits on trades: the dispensation is the product meant for tradespeople parking near a job, and it does not reserve a particular space. If the crew can use your drive, say so when the office rings to confirm the booking.
Gidea Park sits east of Romford (RM1), with builders cleans in Harold Wood further east and Hornchurch to the south. The council's skip licence and tip rules are on the rest of Havering, and what a builders clean costs lists every size of home.

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.
How much is a builders clean for a Gidea Park house?
A 4-bed after a refurbishment usually takes 3 cleaners for 4 hours: £392 all in. A 5-bed takes 3 cleaners for 5 hours: £482. Both are £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents.
Will the crew be careful with original doors and glass?
Yes. Mouldings and panels are wiped by hand, and paint spots on old glass are tried gently. Anything that will not come off is shown to you on the walk-round.
Can you clean only the new loft and the stairs?
Yes, once the works are finished everywhere: a rooms-only clean starts at 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in.
How much notice do you need?
About a week is usually enough; Fridays and weekends go first. Book once the dust-making work has stopped.
