A 1930s Metroland suburb built in under ten years
Until the Metropolitan Railway opened its station in 1906, Rayners Lane was farmland with a single farmstead. Harrow's conservation appraisal describes how, between 1929 and 1938, two developers turned it into a complete suburb: the railway's own estates company built the Harrow Garden Suburb north of the line, and T F Nash mass-produced cheaper houses to the south, even laying a temporary narrow-gauge railway to speed up the work. Most of the terraces and semis were finished by 1935.
The numbers still show it. In the Council Tax records 74.6% of properties in the area with a recorded build date are from 1919 to 1939, and at the 2021 Census 52.0% of households in Pinner South ward lived in semis and 20.6% in detached houses; 75.9% own their home. As a result, many builders cleans here follow work on an existing house; only 7.4% of homes date from 2015 or later.
Cleaning after a loft conversion or extension in a Rayners Lane semi
Ninety years on, these houses are getting dormer lofts, side and rear extensions and opened-up kitchens. Loft dust is the hardest kind to contain: it comes down the stairs on every boot, settles on the spindles and door tops and finds its way into the bedrooms below even with dust sheets up. The crew starts in the loft room, works floor by floor down to the hall and goes back over the ledges at the end, because fine dust drifts down again after the first wipe. When a loft and extension come with the house replastered throughout, a 3-bed usually needs 3 cleaners for 5 hours, £482 all in; the page on construction dust cleaning explains why.
If you lived downstairs while the loft went in, the sofas and mattresses will have collected dust too; sofas and mattresses after the works can be added to the same visit. Landlords should note that across Harrow an Article 4 direction in force from 11 June 2026 means a family semi cannot become a small HMO without planning permission.
Shops and flats on Alexandra Avenue
The heart of Rayners Lane is a conservation area round the station. Its Art Deco cinema of 1936, now the Zoroastrian Centre, is listed Grade II*, and the station itself was built in 1938 in a plain modernist style. Around them, four blocks of shops with flats above, all by one architect, H J Mark, went up on Alexandra Avenue between 1934 and 1936. The conservation area has no Article 4 direction.
Flats over the parade usually have a separate door and a steep stair, so tell the office the floor and how the crew gets in. For a shop refit, a builders clean for offices and shops is priced at £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32; a small unit typically needs 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in. A van stopping on the parade may need a bay suspension: Alexandra Avenue is in Harrow's District tariff area, at £23 per bay per day plus a £60 admin fee with more than ten working days' notice, and part of the avenue is now a trial red route.

Can you clean after the loft conversion while we live downstairs?
Yes, once every trade has finished. The crew does not move personal belongings, food or crockery, so clear the surfaces and cupboards you want cleaned inside.
Can you clean a shop on Alexandra Avenue before it opens?
Yes. Commercial premises are £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32; a small shop after a fit-out usually takes 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in.
Our sofa is covered in dust from the works. Can it be cleaned too?
Yes, as an add-on to the builders clean. A two-seat sofa is £57, and the crew vacuums it first so the cleaning does not turn the dust into a paste.
