In Bury 27.6% of homes were built before 1919, by the council's 2025 housing assessment, so many builders cleans here follow work on old terraces. Complete After Builders cleans a 3-bed semi after a new kitchen and bathroom in 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332 all in.

Bury in numbers

Old terraces, semis and the condition of Bury's homes

Across the borough 38.6% of households live in a semi, 28.3% in a terrace, 18.8% in a detached house and 14.3% in a flat, and 67.3% own their home (Census 2021). The council's Housing Needs and Demand Assessment of November 2025 dates 27.6% of dwellings to before 1919 and another 15.2% to 1919 to 1944. It estimates that 15.7% of homes were non-decent, against 14.6% for England, and 22.6% of privately rented ones. A landlord refitting one between tenancies should book the clean after the last trade and before the inventory photos.

In Bury East ward 41.7% of households live in a terrace and 19.9% in a flat. In the council tax figures for the area, 26.5% of homes with a recorded build date are older than 1900 and 28.4% date from 1919 to 1939. Old plaster dust sits on picture rails and drifts back out of board gaps, so the crew dusts top down and goes round twice, as construction dust cleaning explains.

A 3-bed semi after a new kitchen and bathroom usually takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332 all in, at £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents. A 2-bed town centre flat after decorating is 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212, and a 5-bed detached house after a full renovation is 4 cleaners for 6 hours, £752. Our prices list every size and add-on.

Elton Reservoir, Walshaw and the new homes planned in Bury

Elton Reservoir is Bury's largest housing allocation in Places for Everyone: 3,500 homes, around 875 of them affordable, with a new tram stop, a primary school and three local centres, under a development framework the council adopted with effect from 30 June 2026. Walshaw in north Bury is allocated for 1,250 homes, around 300 affordable, with its own primary school and local centre. Radcliffe has a run of brownfield schemes of its own, set out on the page for builders cleans in Radcliffe.

New streets mean handover cleans, usually light ones. A new 3-bed house takes 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272 all in, and carpet cleaning after building work can follow on the same visit if the carpets went down before the decorators finished.

Building site hours in Bury

Bury Council's demolition and construction guidance sets site hours of 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 2pm on Saturdays, with no Sunday or bank holiday work except in an emergency. A firm that wants to work outside those hours normally applies to the council for prior consent under the Control of Pollution Act 1974.

The Saturday finish at 2pm often sets the date of the clean. If the last sanding or tiling falls on a Saturday, book the clean for any day after it, once the dust has stopped and the tools have gone. About a week's notice is usually enough.

Skip permits, scaffold permits and parking waivers in Bury

In Bury the skip supplier, and only the supplier, applies for a skip permit. On 24 October 2026 the council listed £30 a permit for suppliers on its skip register, which costs £150 to join, and £55 for unregistered suppliers; each permit lasts 1 to 28 days and normally allows one skip per site. A scaffold or hoarding on or next to the highway needs a permit applied for at least 7 days ahead, with proof of £10 million public liability cover and the engineer's design. The council listed £210 per scaffold or hoarding for up to 4 weeks and £210 for each further 4 weeks, and a 1.2 metre walkway must stay open.

Tradespeople can apply for a temporary parking waiver to park on yellow lines, in a loading bay or in a residents' zone, or for a suspension to use a pay and display bay or a council car park space. The council aims to process applications within 2 working days, so apply as soon as the date of the clean is fixed.

Every Street, Cemetery Road and builders' waste in Bury

Bury's two household waste and recycling centres are Every Street in Bury (BL9 5BE) and Cemetery Road in Radcliffe (M26 4FT), closed only on 25 December and 1 January. A household van, hire van, pick-up or twin-axle trailer needs a permit, which gives a van 18 visits a year, and anything over 2 metres high must use the Every Street weighbridge. DIY rubble is capped at five 900mm by 600mm sacks a visit, since rubble is one of the wastes traders most often try to dump. Waste a tradesperson produces while working on your home is business waste and is refused at every centre, so the advice is to make sure disposal is in the builder's quote. Plasterboard a resident took out is accepted in Bury only at Cemetery Road.

Trade waste goes to the waste transfer station on Every Street, which charges by the tonne with a minimum charge set at the price of 500kg. The bulky waste collection, £49 for up to five items, will not take fitted kitchens, worktops, window frames, fence panels, glass shower screens or bagged waste. Renovation waste leaves with the builder, before the clean.

Conservation areas, Article 4 and HMO licensing in Bury

Bury has 12 conservation areas: Ainsworth, All Saints Whitefield, Brooksbottoms and Rowlands, Bury Town Centre, Holcombe, Mount Pleasant, Poppythorn in Prestwich, Pot Green, Ramsbottom, St Mary's Prestwich, Summerseat and Walmersley. Extra Article 4 controls on external alterations apply in Holcombe, close to Ramsbottom, from 31 July 2017, and in St Mary's, Prestwich (M25), from 1 October 2009. Within 800 m of the middle of Bury East ward lie the Bury Town Centre conservation area and 38 listed buildings, among them the Grade I Parish Church of St Mary.

A borough-wide Article 4 Direction, made with immediate effect, is in effect from 16 July 2026 and subject to confirmation: turning a house into a small HMO for 3 to 6 people needs planning permission while it stands. The council must confirm it within six months of that date or it lapses, and HMOs created before 16 July 2026 are not affected. Any HMO with five or more people from two or more households, small ones included, also needs a mandatory licence. The council listed £685.50 for up to five lettings plus £29 for each extra letting; licences last up to five years, and letting one without a licence can bring a fine of up to £20,000.

Bury builders clean questions

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.

Can my builder take the waste to Every Street?

Not to the recycling centre, which refuses trade waste. The builder can use the waste transfer station on Every Street, which charges by the tonne, or hire a skip.

Who applies for a skip permit in Bury?

The skip supplier. On 24 October 2026 the council listed £30 a permit for registered suppliers and £55 for unregistered ones, each lasting up to 28 days.

Where does the crew park in a Bury residents' zone?

On your drive if you have one, or on a visitor permit. If neither works, the office talks it through: Bury's temporary parking waiver covers residents' zones, yellow lines and loading bays; the council aims to process it within 2 working days.

Does Bury's Article 4 Direction affect a house already let as an HMO?

Not if it became an HMO before 16 July 2026. The direction is in effect from that date and subject to confirmation, and while it stands a new small HMO needs planning permission.
