Detached houses from the 1920s to the 1970s
Council Tax records for Wirral 037, the area round CH60 0AJ, date 25.9% of homes with a recorded build date to 1919 to 1939 and 32.0% to 1945 to 1972; another 19.2% went up between 1973 and 1999, and 6.4% (about 240 homes) since 2015. Census 2021 puts only 10.9% of Heswall ward households in flats and 4.1% in terraced houses.
A house of that age being extended usually gets a new open-plan kitchen across the back, an en suite or two and new glazing. Dust from knocking through travels the length of the ground floor and settles on door tops, in light fittings and in the tracks of new sliding or folding doors, which the crew vacuums out and wipes. Bigger houses get a bigger crew, so the clean still fits a working day:
| Heswall house after the works | Crew | All in |
|---|---|---|
| 3-bed after a new kitchen | 2 cleaners for 5 hours | £332 |
| 4-bed after an extension | 3 cleaners for 4 hours | £392 |
| 5-bed after an extension | 3 cleaners for 5 hours | £482 |
| 5-bed after a full refit | 4 cleaners for 6 hours | £752 |
Each bathroom beyond the first adds about an hour and a half of cleaner time, which is where the hours go in a house with three en suites. The maths, £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents, is on what a builders clean costs.
Small schemes on Pensby Road and Telegraph Road
The council's brownfield register lists sites for new homes nearby, most of them small schemes with permission. Heswall Gospel Hall on Pensby Road has permission for 23 homes (March 2021); 277 and 279 Telegraph Road have permission for six each; Lawnswood at 39 Quarry Road East has nine.
A handover clean in a new flat is lighter than an extension clean: fine dust inside the units, labels on the glazing, sealant smears in the bathroom. A new 2-bed flat takes 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212 all in. Grout haze across a whole new tiled floor is a separate job, the hard floor deep clean at £6 a m²: see tile and grout cleaning.
Lower Village, The Dales and Heath Drive
The Heswall Lower Village conservation area lies within 800 m of CH60 0AJ. The council describes it as the nucleus of the small fishing village that came before the railway suburb, with a church and rectory, a pub, a village hall, shops, cottage-scale homes and former farm buildings such as Lydiate Farm and The Old Smithy; the Church of St Peter is Grade II*. Cottages like these often have low ceilings and uneven old floors, and the crew treats their joinery gently.
Pipers Lane and The Dales are covered by two of Wirral's older Article 4 directions. On Heath Drive, residents parking Zone H dates from after 2007, so permits cost £10 a year and each home can hold one visitor permit: lend it to the crew, or leave the drive free, and the van stays by the door.
Rubble from a Heswall extension
The crew does not remove rubble, plasterboard or the old kitchen. Residents doing their own DIY can take rubble and plasterboard to the West Kirby or Clatterbridge tips, but neither accepts paint and both refuse trade waste, so whatever the builder pulled out goes in their skip or with a licensed carrier before the clean. Skip permits and the rest of the council rules are on the rest of Wirral. Along the coast, West Kirby has a different housing mix and the same council; on the other side of the peninsula, Port Sunlight (CH62) is a listed village.
