Morden's 1930s terraces and the St Helier estate
Merton's character study calls Morden the only Metroland-type suburb in south London. The Underground arrived in September 1926, the farmland went under houses within a few years, and the Wimbledon to Sutton railway followed in January 1930. The London County Council built the St Helier estate in the same decade for inner-London workers, the largest council development in south London. Today 46.7% of St Helier ward households live in terraced houses and 19.2% in semis.
Those houses are close to a hundred years old, and the typical jobs are kitchen extensions at the back, loft conversions and rooms knocked through downstairs. A knock-through is the dustiest of the three, because the brick and plaster dust from the opening reaches both rooms and the hall. The crew starts upstairs and works down, wipes every door and frame, clears the dust off the stair treads and spindles, and vacuums and mops the hard floors last.
A 3-bed terrace after an extension takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332. If the work was a repaint and new carpets only, 2 cleaners for 4 hours is usually enough, £272. A 2-bed flat in one of the newer blocks after a refurbishment is 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272. Other totals are on the full price list.
Upper Morden, St Lawrence's and Morden Hall Park
Upper Morden conservation area, designated in 1986, covers the village round St Lawrence's Church, which is mostly from 1636 and listed Grade I, and Morden Park. Down by the Wandle, Morden Hall Park covers about 50 hectares, keeps the original waterwheel in its former snuff mill, and passed to the National Trust in 1941.
Few homes date from before 1919 (2.5% of the homes with a recorded build date in the local council tax stock), so period cleaning here is the exception. Where it does come up, near the church and Morden Park, the crew treats old floors and glass with the gentlest product that works.
Water, parking and the tip on Garth Road
The crew needs water, hot water, power and lights on the day. Morden is split between two water companies: SES Water supplies parts of SM4 from its Cheam works, and Thames Water the area round the town centre. In December 2024 Merton warned that a fault at the Cheam works was causing low pressure and intermittent supply to some SM4 homes, so if your plumber has only just reconnected the boiler, check it runs hot before the cleaning day.
Morden's zones keep different hours. M1 and M2 are controlled on weekdays from 10am to 4pm only, M4 on weekdays from 8.30am to 6.30pm, and M3 every day from 8.30am to 6.30pm; M3 and M4 bays are for permit holders, so the crew needs a visitor permit there.
Merton's household tip is on Garth Road in Morden, but a builder's rubble counts as trade waste and will not be accepted. Agree with your builder that the rubble, offcuts and old units leave before the crew comes. What the crew lifts is the residue: a dust clean after sanding and plastering and paint spots where they will come off. Grout residue on new floors needs the hard floor deep clean, an extra at £6 a m².
Morden town centre and the streets around it
The Local Plan allocates 1,822 homes to the regeneration of Morden town centre, and the council's brownfield register lists other sites for new homes nearby, so new flats will need handover cleans here in the years ahead.
SM4 runs over the boundary into Sutton's St Helier East and West wards, where Sutton's rules apply. To the east, builders cleans in Mitcham are Merton's too; to the west, Motspur Park (KT3) is a similar inter-war suburb. How long does a builders clean take after a Morden loft conversion?
Usually 2 cleaners for 5 hours for a 3-bed terrace. A loft job sends dust down the new stairs into every floor, so the crew starts in the loft room and works down.
Do I need the boiler working?
Yes. The crew needs running hot water, power and working lights; without hot water the bathrooms and kitchen cannot be cleaned properly.
Will you take away the old kitchen units?
No. The crew does not remove builders' waste or old fittings; that is for your builder or a licensed waste carrier.
