Builders cleans in Mitcham's 1930s houses and post-war blocks
Only 7% of the homes near Cricket Green were built before 1919. Most of the rest came in two waves: the inter-war terraces and semis (42.9%), then the post-war estates (23.3% from 1945 to 1972), with another 17.5% from 1973 to 1999. Merton's character study names Pollards Hill and Eastfields as the low-density, mid-rise estates of that second wave. In Cricket Green ward, half of households (50.7%) live in flats, mostly purpose-built, and 30.5% in terraced houses.
Inter-war houses have plainer plasterwork than a Victorian terrace, so the dust sits in different places: on the picture rail, along the top of every flush door, inside the airing cupboard and in the gap behind a radiator. Typical jobs are a kitchen extension, a loft conversion or a full rewire. A 3-bed house after a refurbishment takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332. If it was only decorating and new carpets, the lighter clean is 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272. A 1-bed flat after a new kitchen and flooring is 2 cleaners for 3 hours: £212. Other sizes are on our prices.
Cricket Green, The Canons and the older Mitcham
The old village centre round the green became a conservation area in 1968, and the boundary grew in 1990 to bring in Mitcham Garden Village and a slice of Mitcham Park. Merton's appraisal traces cricket on the green back to 1707 or earlier and dates the dovecote at The Canons to around 1511, which would make it the borough's oldest building. Thirty-four listed buildings stand within 800 metres of the middle of Cricket Green ward, including the Grade I Eagle House.
Work in those houses calls for slower cleaning. Old sashes are opened only where they move freely so the runners can be vacuumed, paint is lifted off old glass where it comes away and left where it does not, and original floors get the mildest product that works. The Wandle Valley conservation area, which follows the river past old mill sites, lies just to the west.
New homes on the gasworks and the estate rebuilds
The council's brownfield register lists sites for new homes within 1.5 km of the middle of Cricket Green ward. The largest is the former Mitcham gasworks on Western Road, which has full planning permission for 579 homes, and the Local Plan allocates the Morrisons site on Majestic Way for 150.
New flats arrive with builders' dust in every kitchen unit and wardrobe, protective film and labels on the windows, and grout film on the bathroom tiles. A handover clean takes the film and labels off, lifts the grout film and sealant where they will come off, and leaves the floors vacuumed and mopped; grout haze and silicone smears take most of the time. The crew cannot start while snagging trades are still in the block.
Parking, landlord licences and the CR4 boundary
Zone hours in Mitcham swing widely. The town centre zone, MTC, stays controlled until 11pm six days a week. Zone MT is controlled for four hours on weekdays (11am to 3pm), which still catches a crew that starts at 8am. In FG2 and LS the bays are for permit holders alone, seven days a week from 8.30am to 6.30pm, so the van needs a resident's visitor permit or a space off the road.
Figge's Marsh, Pollards Hill and Longthornton are in Merton's selective licensing scheme until 23 September 2028, and Cricket Green and Lavender Fields are in its additional HMO scheme. Parts of CR4 belong to Croydon, Lambeth or Sutton, so confirm the council first. To the north-west, Tooting (SW17) is in Wandsworth; to the west, builders cleans in Morden share Merton's rules; and Streatham, in Lambeth, lies to the north-east. For skip, scaffold and tip rules, see the rest of Merton.

How many hours does a Mitcham 3-bed need?
After a refurbishment, 2 cleaners for 5 hours. A heavy job with plaster dust through every room can need 3 cleaners for 5 hours: £482 all in. Photos of each room let the office confirm which before the day.
Can you get limescale off the new shower screen?
Usually, when it is fresh. Mitcham's water is hard: Thames Water's Mitcham supply zone ran 232 to 289 mg/l in 2025. Old scale on a kept bath or tap may not come off fully, and the crew says so on the day.
Do you clean a flat before the tenants move in?
Yes, once the builders have finished and taken their rubbish. The crew cleans the cupboards inside once they are empty, the bathroom, the inside of the windows and every floor, so the flat is ready to let.
