Grange Road semis, mansion blocks and cottages round Barnes Green
Another 17.4% of the homes round the Green are older than 1900 and 23.5% went up between the wars; barely 40 date from 2015 or later. The Barnes Green conservation area dates from January 1969 (it was last enlarged in 2018) and holds most of that history in a few streets. Its statement picks out Victorian mansion blocks four storeys high, villas of two storeys and Edwardian semis on Grange Road that rise to three. There are also little workers' cottages on and near Cleveland Road, Limes Avenue and The Maltings.
A three-storey semi after a loft conversion has dust on two flights of stairs, every spindle and the top of every door, so the crew starts in the new loft room and works down to the hall. A mansion flat has tall rooms, deep skirting and picture rails that collect plaster dust, and the kit goes up a shared staircase, so tell the office which floor the flat is on. In a cottage the rooms are small and the dust from a kitchen extension reaches all of them.
In Barnes ward 29.9% of households live in semi-detached houses and 23.9% in terraces, against 39.6% in flats. New-build handovers are rare here, though the council's brownfield register lists sites for new homes nearby, among them the old Barnes Hospital.
Sash windows in Castelnau and paint on old glass
Castelnau, a conservation area from 1977, was laid out once the toll bridge at Hammersmith had opened. Twenty pairs of classical villas came first; big Victorian houses and tall Edwardian mansion flats filled in later. Mill Hill, Madrid Road and Barnes Common are the other conservation areas within 800 metres of the middle of Barnes ward, so original sashes are common in Barnes.
After the decorators, the crew opens each sash that moves freely, vacuums the runners, wipes the frames and sills and takes paint flecks off old glass only where they lift without force. Labels and stickers come off new glazing. Glass on the outside is an extra, done only where it can be reached safely from inside or from the ground; window cleaning after the builders has the detail.
Barnes water is hard. Thames Water's 2025 report for its Barnes supply zone gives a mean of 260 mg/l as calcium carbonate, so the plumber's test runs leave white marks on new taps and shower screens. The crew takes those off where they will come off; older limescale it tries to shift but cannot promise, and the page on grout haze and silicone smears explains what does and does not come away.
Parking for the crew in Barnes zones
In zone B1, which takes in most of Barnes, the controls last two hours on weekdays (10am to noon), so the van needs cover for that window and nothing else. Zone CB in the middle of the village and the M3 pay and display bays on the High Street are controlled six days a week, 8am to 6.30pm, and zone B near Hammersmith Bridge runs 10am to 6.30pm on weekdays. In a controlled street a trader permit from the resident or a space on the drive does the job; if neither is possible, paid parking is passed on at cost.
The builder's skip and rubble should be gone before the clean. Richmond's tip takes free DIY rubble only from householders in small loads, so a paid builder takes their own waste away; the crew deals with the dust that is left. Skip, scaffold and suspension fees for the rest of Richmond upon Thames are on the borough page.
How long a builders clean takes in a Barnes house
A 4-bed semi after a standard refurbishment usually takes 3 cleaners for 4 hours: £392 all in. A loft conversion usually falls in the same band. After a full refit, with every room replastered, allow 4 cleaners for 5 hours, £632. A 2-bed mansion flat after a refurbishment is £272 for 2 cleaners for 4 hours. Each bathroom after the first adds about an hour and a half. The working is £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents, and what a builders clean costs sets out every size.
The crew works top to bottom and dusts more than once, because construction dust cleaning is mostly about the fine dust that settles again after the first pass. East across Barnes Common, Putney is in Wandsworth; on the far bank of the river, builders cleans in Chiswick follow Hounslow's rules.

Will the crew get paint off old sash window glass?
Where it lifts without force, yes. Old glass scratches easily, so the crew does not scrape hard, and it tells you on the day if a fleck will not come off.
We are in zone B1. Does the crew need a permit?
Only for the controlled hours, 10am to noon on weekdays. A trader permit or a space on the drive covers it; otherwise paid parking is passed on at cost.
When should I book the clean after a loft conversion?
Once the plastering, sanding and painting are finished and the builders have taken their tools and rubbish away. About a week's notice is usually enough, and Fridays and weekends go first.
Can you clean the stair carpet as well?
Yes, as an add-on: a flight of stairs is £41 and a landing £9. Carpet that sat under dust sheets still holds fine dust; see carpet cleaning after building work.
