Victorian houses split into flats
Brent's appraisal dates Harlesden's rapid growth to 1880 to 1910, when the railway yards at Willesden Junction and the trams brought workers and builders; Minet Avenue, Acton Lane, Bramshill Road and Nightingale Road filled with houses in the 1890s. On the Valuation Office's March 2025 figures, 64.6% of local homes with a recorded build date were built before 1900 and 13.2% between 1900 and 1918. At the 2021 Census 74.7% of Harlesden and Kensal Green ward households lived in flats: 37.4% in converted houses and 34.2% in purpose-built blocks.
A flat in one of those houses is what a Harlesden builders clean usually means. The crew starts at the ceiling: cornice, picture rail, the top of the sash box and the pelmet, then door frames, radiators and skirting. Plaster dust settles again after the first pass, so every room is dusted twice before the floors are vacuumed and mopped. A bathroom fitted into a box room has new tiles, a screen and a lot of grout haze. The builders clean takes the haze off the wall tiles; haze across the whole floor is tile and grout cleaning, an extra at £6 a m².
Flats above the High Street shops in the conservation area
The Harlesden conservation area, designated in March 1994, is the town centre itself: tall, narrow-fronted buildings of three and four storeys along a dog-legged High Street, with the 1887 Jubilee Clock in the middle and the Grade II* All Souls Church of 1879 framing it. Speculative builders put up the parades plot by plot, shops below and homes above. Commercial premises and flats in the centre have no permitted development rights, so the upper floors keep many of their old windows.
For a flat over a shop the crew carries its vacuums, ladders and detergents up a side stair, so tell us where the door is and where the van can stop to unload. Upper-floor glass is cleaned from inside, frames and sills included; outside glass is an extra, done only where it is safe to reach from inside or the ground. A 1-bed above a shop after a refurbishment is usually 2 cleaners for 3 hours: £212 all in.
Getting a Harlesden flat ready to let
In 2021, 37.7% of ward households rented privately and 32.8% rented socially, against 29.4% who owned. Harlesden and Kensal Green was one of the three wards in Brent's first selective licensing designation, in force from 1 August 2023 for five years, so every private single-household let there needs a licence, and a borough-wide additional licence for smaller shared houses followed on 2 February 2026.
A refurbishment between tenants ends with our clean: kitchen cupboards inside and out once emptied, appliances wiped outside, bathroom fittings, every switch, socket and radiator, and the glass inside. Carpets are vacuumed; if they sat under the dust for weeks, carpet cleaning is from £36 a bedroom. Bookings across the rest of Brent work the same way: photos by email, a call from the office, then a 50% deposit to hold the date.
Abbey Road, the recycling centre for Brent residents
Brent residents in Harlesden are close to Abbey Road Reuse and Recycling Centre (NW10 7TJ), which is shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A household gets one free DIY visit a week, two 50 litre bags of rubble or one bulky item, and anything from paid building work is charged. That suits a resident clearing a few bags after a weekend job; a builder's skip of plaster and old kitchen units is the builder's to remove, and it must be gone before the crew arrives.
New homes are coming too. In July 2026 the council set out plans with Stonebridge Real Estate Development for more than 1,000 homes on the Bridge Park and former Unisys site by the North Circular, and its brownfield register lists more sites for new homes nearby. Willesden is the next page north and North Kensington lies south across the canal; the full price list gives every size.

How much is a builders clean for a flat in Harlesden?
A 2-bed flat after a refurbishment is usually 2 cleaners for 4 hours, £272 all in; a 1-bed is often 2 cleaners for 3 hours, £212. The rate is £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents.
Can you clean just one flat in a converted house?
Yes. Tell us which floor and whether the shared hall and stairs are part of the job; the crew cleans what you book and nothing belonging to the neighbours.

No. The works must be finished in the whole flat, with tools, materials and rubbish gone and water, hot water, power and lights on.
