Kerry Avenue, Stanmore Hill and the Article 4 areas
Harrow lists six conservation areas in Stanmore and Edgware, and five of them carry an Article 4 direction: Little Common, Stanmore Hill, Old Church Lane, Kerry Avenue and Canons Park Estate. All five are within 800 m of the middle of Stanmore ward, along with 37 listed buildings, three of them Grade II*. Kerry Avenue, first designated in 1980, exists because the Underground reached Stanmore in the 1930s; building there began in 1935, and the council's appraisal cites it as the earliest group of houses in west London built on Modern Movement lines, with flat roofs, white render and wide steel-framed windows. Stanmore Hill, designated in 1975 and extended in 1980, grew up along the old road to London around the eighteenth-century Abercorn.
Both mean care with the glass and the woodwork. Old steel window frames and their tracks collect plaster dust and paint flecks; the crew cleans them by hand, takes labels off any new glazing and lifts paint spots where they will come off. Rendered walls and old plaster are dusted, never washed.
Post-war houses, flats and big detached homes
Most of Stanmore is newer than its conservation areas. In the Council Tax records 34.7% of properties in the area with a recorded build date are from 1945 to 1972, 20.8% from 1973 to 1999 and 18.5% from 2000 to 2014, with 310 more built in 2015 or later. At the 2021 Census Stanmore ward had 26.2% of households in detached houses, more than twice the Harrow share of 11.3%, and 40.7% in flats, most of them purpose-built.
A detached house with three or four bathrooms takes longer than its bedroom count suggests, because each extra bathroom adds roughly an hour and a half of cleaner time. A flat in a newer block is quicker but needs the lift, the entry system and the parking sorted with the managing agent before the day.
Why do new taps and screens in Stanmore already have limescale?
Affinity Water's 2025 report for its Stanmore and Mill Hill supply zone gives total hardness of 348 to 358 mg/l, a mean of 353. If the trades have been using the new shower and taps during the works, a glass screen or chrome tap can already carry a limescale film by the day of the clean. The crew uses a descaler suited to the finish and tells you on the day what will not lift; limescale is one of the things it cannot promise to remove. The full bathroom list is on the page about cleaning a new kitchen or bathroom.
What a builders clean costs in Stanmore
A 4-bed detached house after a refurbishment usually takes 3 cleaners for 4 hours: £392 all in. A 5-bed after a refurbishment is more often 3 cleaners for 5 hours at £482 before any extra bathrooms, and a 2-bed flat after a new kitchen or bathroom 2 cleaners for 4 hours at £272. Each total is £30 per cleaner-hour plus £32 for equipment and detergents, and the full price list has every size. Outside glass is extra, and only where it can be reached safely from inside or the ground; see window cleaning after the builders.
A skip on the road needs a Harrow licence, £82.30 for 14 days and double if it goes out without one. If the skip is on your drive, the van will need to park elsewhere, and Harrow rarely allows parking on a single yellow line for building work where the house has a driveway, so a visitor permit is the usual answer. Crews also work in Edgware to the east and Wealdstone to the south, and the borough's tip and parking rules are on the page for Harrow.

Can you clean the old steel-framed windows on a Kerry Avenue house?
Yes. The inside of the glass, the frames, sills and tracks are part of the builders clean, done by hand. Outside glass is an add-on, from £66, where it can be reached safely.
Our skip is still on the drive. Can the crew come anyway?
Yes, if the house itself is clear of rubble and every trade has finished. Tell the office, because the van will need a space on the street or a visitor permit.
Will the limescale on our new taps and shower screen come off?
Often, if it is recent, though the crew cannot promise it. It tries with a product suited to the finish and shows you anything that will not lift before it leaves.
