Stepney's homes split between post-war estates (about four in ten homes just north of Mile End Road, round E1 4AR, date from 1945 to 1972) and the Georgian and Victorian streets of Stepney Green. A 2-bed ex-council flat after a refurbishment usually takes 2 cleaners for 4 hours, which is £272 all in.

Stepney in numbers

Mansion blocks and Georgian terraces round Stepney Green

Stepney Green conservation area, designated in January 1973, takes in the Trinity Green almshouses of 1695 on Mile End Road and the streets running south towards the old village of Stepney. Most of it is two to four storeys of 18th and 19th century terraces, with three-storey brick houses on Maria Terrace. The late Victorian mansion blocks stand out: Cressy House of 1894 and Dunstan House of 1899 on Cressy Place, four storeys each, and Stepney Green Court of 1895, which rises to six.

A mansion flat usually means stairs. Tell the office the floor and whether there is a lift, so the crew and the hours are planned for carrying vacuums, a 2 m ladder and detergents up by hand. Inside, the dust from a rewire or replastering settles on deep skirtings, cornices and the boxes of tall sash windows, and the crew works from the ceiling line down.

South of the green, York Square conservation area keeps the early 19th century terraces of the Mercers' estate round York Square, beside the Grade I listed church of St Dunstan. Houses like these have original floorboards under the new paint spots, so the crew uses a product that suits old timber and says on the day what will not lift.

Post-war estates and ex-council flats in E1

Away from the green, much of Stepney is post-war. In the Council Tax stock just north of Mile End Road, round E1 4AR, 42.9% of the homes with a recorded build date went up between 1945 and 1972, more than in any other period, and across Stepney Green and St Dunstan's wards the 2021 Census found 49.5% of households in social housing. So plenty of the building work goes on inside ex-council flats owned by leaseholders: a new kitchen and bathroom, new windows, sanded boards.

Rubble from a refit of that size usually needs a skip on the street. The licence is for the household or the builder to get, with 7 working days' notice to the council, and the skip has to go before the crew comes. A 3-bed maisonette after a refurbishment usually takes 2 cleaners for 5 hours: £332 all in; a full refit with new ceilings is 3 cleaners for 5 hours, £482. New tiles leave a cement haze, and grout haze and silicone smears come off the wall tiles, glass and taps as part of the clean where they will lift. A whole floor of new tiles is another matter: that haze needs the hard floor deep clean, £6 a m² extra.

Parking in zone C and what to sort before the day

Stepney falls in Tower Hamlets parking zone C, with Shadwell. Sub-zones C1, C3, C4 and most of C2 are controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, so a weekend clean is easier to park for; Fridays and weekends also book up first, so give about a week's notice.

Before the crew arrives the trades should be finished, tools and offcuts out and water, hot water, power and lights on. Empty the kitchen cupboards and wardrobes if you want the insides cleaned; the crew does not move personal belongings, food or crockery. A dust clean after sanding and plastering sets out the order of work, and what a builders clean costs lists every size.

The same crews cover Whitechapel (E1) to the west, Bethnal Green to the north and after builders cleaning in Tower Hamlets as far as the Isle of Dogs.

What a builders clean costs here

CleanersHours£30£32 kit

Every crew brings its own vacuums, cloths, ladders and detergents; the £32 covers them once per job. The table shows our usual starting point for a standard refurbishment. Lighter or heavier work moves it, and you can set your own crew and hours in the form.

Stepney builders clean questions

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.

Can you clean a mansion block flat with no lift?

Yes. The crew carries the kit up; tell the office which floor it is so the crew and hours are right from the start.

What does a builders clean cost for a Stepney flat?

A 1-bed after a refurbishment is £212 (2 cleaners for 3 hours) and a 2-bed is £272 (2 cleaners for 4 hours). After decorating only, a 2-bed is often £212. Each total includes the £32 kit charge.

Will you get paint spots off the old floorboards?

The crew tries, with a product that suits the surface, and tells you on the day what will not come off. Paint on old boards is never promised because some paints are not water-based.

Do you clean inside kitchen cupboards and wardrobes?

Yes, inside and out, as long as they are empty. Appliances are wiped outside; inside the oven or fridge is an extra.
