Whitechapel is a renters' neighbourhood: 53.5% of households in the ward rent privately, and more than a quarter of local homes were built in 2015 or later. Complete After Builders gets refitted flats ready to let, and a 1-bed after a refurbishment is usually £212 all in.

Whitechapel in numbers

Georgian terraces in Myrdle Street and Parfett Street

The oldest homes sit in the Myrdle Street conservation area, south of Whitechapel Road. Its boundary was redrawn and its appraisal adopted in October 2021. Nos. 8 to 28 Myrdle Street and long runs of Parfett Street are Grade II listed early 19th century terraces: two bays wide, three storeys over a basement, yellow stock brick and six-over-six sash windows under gauged brick arches. A few doors on Parfett Street still have their fanlights.

Houses this narrow have one staircase and small rooms, so dust from a basement conversion or a new kitchen climbs the whole house. The crew starts at the top floor and works down. It wipes every glazing bar of the sashes and the fanlight from inside and vacuums the basement last. Original boards and joinery get a cloth and a product that suits old timber; paint spots on them come off where they will, and the crew tells you on the day what will not.

Within 800 m of E1 1RD there are 167 listed buildings, from the Whitechapel Gallery to the Grade I skin floor warehouse on Wapping Lane, and more than ten conservation areas, Fournier Street and Whitechapel High Street among them.

New rented flats and getting a flat ready to let

Much of the housing round E1 1RD is new: in the Council Tax stock there, 30.4% of the homes with a recorded build date went up from 2000 to 2014 and 28.3% in 2015 or later, and the 2021 Census put 93.8% of households in the ward in flats. With more than half of the ward's households renting privately, a common job is a landlord or agent turning a flat round between tenants after new flooring or a repaint.

Landlords should know the licensing position. Tower Hamlets' selective licensing scheme for Whitechapel, Weavers and Spitalfields and Banglatown wards ran from 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2026 and closed to new applications, while the additional licensing scheme covers shared homes across the borough until 31 March 2029.

A studio after decorating is usually £212 (2 cleaners for 3 hours) and a 2-bed after a full refit £332 (2 cleaners for 5 hours). If the furniture stays, sofas and mattresses after the works can be done on the same visit, from £57 for a two-seat sofa, and carpet cleaning from £36 a bedroom. The crew does not move personal belongings, so clear the shelves first.

Parking west of Brick Lane and round the market

Sort the parking first. Tower Hamlets enforces resident bays west of Brick Lane from 8.30am to 10pm every day, much longer than the 8.30am to 5.30pm weekday hours on most other streets. Tell the office your street when you book and whether you can get a visitor voucher.

The crews also cover builders cleans in Stepney to the east, under the Tower Hamlets rules set out on after builders cleaning in Tower Hamlets, and Tower Hill (EC3N) to the south-west, partly in the City of London, and Shoreditch, in Hackney, to the north-west, where other councils' rules apply. The full price list shows every size.

Whitechapel builders clean questions

Anything else? Ring 07418 351088.

Can you get a rented flat in Whitechapel ready to let after the works?

Yes. The crew removes the builders' dust from every surface it can reach and cleans the kitchen and bathroom fittings; you or your agent then walk round with them before they leave.

How much does a builders clean cost for a studio in E1?

£212 all in for 2 cleaners for 3 hours after a refurbishment, or £272 (2 cleaners for 4 hours) when plaster has gone over the floors. The £32 kit charge is included.

Do you clean basements after a conversion?

Yes, once the builders have finished and the power and lights are on down there. Basement dust keeps settling on every ledge, so the crew dusts it more than once.

Do you need me to empty the cupboards?

Yes, if you want the insides cleaned. The crew does not move personal belongings, food or crockery.
